An au pair is expected to spend 25 hours per week helping the family and
must be available two evenings a week for babysitting. In return, the
family will pay you £70 per week in pocket money.
Your duties should include help with children and light housework.
Please remember that you may need to show some flexibility with the amount
of help you provide the family. However, if you are regularly helping
more than 5 hours per day then you should be rewarded for that.
Your food and a bedroom of your own is provided by the host family.
Calling the family
Once you have agreed to join a host family, it is important to call the
family a few days before you arrive if you have not spoken to them before.
Try to ask as many questions about them and their children as this will
help you to know where you are going to live and what it will be like.
If you are not confident about being able to understand what they are
saying, just call them to say that you are happy to be joining their family
and confirm with them the airport or train/bus terminal that you will
arrive in and the time and date that you will arrive.
On arrival in the United Kingdom
It is a nice gesture to take a small gift for the children or parents
when you arrive in the United Kingdom for the first time.
College
All our au pairs are expected to attend a language course which is paid
by the au pair. This provides the best opportunity to meet friends, develop
a social life and to improve your English.
